"Reasons to be cheerful"

Well, I finally got our net conx back up at home. What a tediously pointless execise that was, but it is done! When I searched about a bit to double-check my config, it was surprising to me how little doco there was on using a Linux box with Verizon DSL. It looked like most folks had just put a router in and put all their other stuff behind it. While Verizon has occasionally made changes that have caused my conx to be sad until I adjusted my config to match, I still am not ready to give up and go with some appliance, myself.

A more unalloyed pleasure came from looking at a story my daughter started. Every so often one of the kids will come up with something that makes me think, "Wow... how cool!" and this was one of those times. She may or may not finish the story (being 11 and capricious), but I liked what she had done enough so far that I wanted to share part of it.

In a log cabin somewhere where it snows
Something is happening, but what, no one knows
In a log cabin, all made out of wood
Something is happening, it could be bad, or good

"Mommy, what does that mean?" says Ammonia White, a girl of about 10-1/2 with odd green eyes & strikingly yellow hair. Her mother, Patricia, replied: "To tell the truth, I don't know myself. I've been puzzling over that one ever since I was young & I think the writer wanted the reader to find out for him or herself." "Hmm" said Ammonia, whose thoughts were cut off by her mother saying "well that will have to be it for today, it's getting late" "Okay then, goodnight" she replied, giving her mother a great big hug. "Goodnight, see you in the morning" her mother said, hugging back. When her mother left the room, she went to sleep.

I haven't nagged about punctuation and so on, obviously (a bit early for proofreading, after all), but I liked the nice, informal style she has going. The story goes on with the foreshadowed cabin appearing the next day... I just wanted put a bit up here, for the record.

oooooh!!!! she MUST finish the story, because i want to know what it is!!!! smile

sounds like the beginning of a stephen king novel to me (and that is a good, good thing, imho.).

I hope she does, too! Still, I'll be satisfied as long as she continues to enjoy the process of expressing herself in writing and drawing. If she keeps it up, she'll eventually have stories that she will want to take to completion, even if it isn't this one.

I'm also a bit worried about falling into a "football father" kind of thing where I end up putting my desires to write on her shoulders... so I'm not pushing. ;-)

Now with hot VPN action!
To all the people who were concerned about this point, I also have the VPN working again now. Apparently freeswan is weak and openswan is the cheese. Not only will the deb module package for openswan compile (something which was a bit beyond the freeswan one), but the AT&T MTS patches are already incorporated. I just checked my hated work mail and received an important spam concerning a "$250 Gap Gift Card", so everything is back to normal.
